Concentration of Recovery Centers by State

If you or someone you love is suffering from a substance addiction, you may have done a bit of research into treatment and recovery options in your area.

We took a look at how many substance abuse treatment centers there are in each state and compared those numbers to the number of people who have experienced a fatal overdose in each state to see if the numbers correlate.

States with the Highest Concentration of Treatment Centers

1. California: 1,502 treatment centers and 4,659 overdoses
2. New York: 898 treatment centers and 2,754 overdoses
3. Florida: 726 treatment centers and 3,228 overdoses
4. Illinois: 679 treatment centers and 1,835 overdoses
5. Pennsylvania: 578 treatment centers and 3,264 overdoses
6. North Carolina: 513 treatment centers and 1,567 overdoses
7. Texas: 502 treatment centers and 2,588 overdoses
8. Michigan: 465 treatment centers and 1,980 overdoses
9. Ohio: 464 treatment centers and 3,310 overdoses
10. Washington: 445 treatment centers and 1,094 overdoses

As you can see from looking at these numbers, the number of treatment centers in each state seems to correspond more closely with the population rather than the number of overdoses residents experience. In some ways, this makes sense, as death by overdose is certainly not the first or only sign of substance use disorder or addiction.

However, this made us curious to look at the data the other way around and compare the number of overdoses in each state with the number of treatment facilities available.

States with the Highest Number of Fatal Overdoses (per 100,000 people)

1. West Virginia: 41.5 per 100,000 people (725 total) and 108 treatment centers
2. New Hampshire: 34.3 per 100,000 people (422 total) and 72 treatment centers
3. Kentucky: 29.9 per 100,000 people (1,273 total) and 418 treatment centers
4. Ohio: 29.9 per 100,000 people (3,310 total) and 464 treatment centers
5. Rhode Island: 28.2 per 100,000 people (310 total) and 56 treatment centers
6. Pennsylvania: 26.3 per 100,000 people (3,264 total) and 578 treatment centers
7. Massachusetts: 25.7 per 100,000 people (1,724 total) and 414 treatment centers
8. New Mexico: 25.3 per 100,000 people (501 total) and 140 treatment centers
9. Utah: 23.4 per 100,000 people (646 total) 269 treatment centers
10. Tennessee: 22.2 per 100,000 people (1,457 total) and 221 treatment centers

According to the Center for Disease Control, who reported these numbers, opioids were responsible for the largest number of fatal overdoses across the country.
